Why 20 mins?
Chemical sunscreen soaks into the skin and absorbs UV before it can damage your skin cells. When applied, it doesn’t instantly start protecting you. The 20 minute window gives sunscreen enough time to activate and ensure you’re shielded when you do step out in the sun.
Mineral sunscreens sit on top of the skin and reflect UV and therefore don’t need the 20minute absorption time.
Failing to apply chemical sunscreen 20 minutes before heading outside can leave your skin exposed to UV rays during the most dangerous initial period of sun exposure, which can be enough to cause damage over time.
While sunscreen is critical, it should be part of a broader sun safety routine.
Remember to:
*seek shade, especially during peak UV hours
*wear protective clothing, including hats and sunglasses
*monitor the UV index daily and take extra precautions when it’s high.
As we enter into the long weekend, we have one question to ask you…….Do you apply your sunscreen 20 minutes before going out in the sun?
